Conflict Resolution

Learning helpful conflict resolution skills can improve all our social relationships. Learning to politely disagree and work through problems is one of the most important social skills we can develop. The same steps you use in negotiating Family roles can be used in negotiating with friends, Family, and others. This same process can also be used after deployment when your loved one returns home.

Changes and choices in life can bring conflict. As individuals, we each have a unique set of wants, needs, ideas, and views. Sometimes these things may seem incompatible or even in opposition with another persons. We disagree. We may disagree about what happened or should happen, what was said or unsaid, what was intended or unintended, what is true or untrue. How we handle our differences is key to handling the struggles of life. Such differences, when handled well, result in creative results, positive interaction, and stronger relationships. When disagreement is poorly dealt with, the outcome can destroy relationships and create unwanted results for everyone involved.

In the long term, working through difficulties together will help us live a less stressful and more satisfying life. Learning effective conflict resolution skills can improve all our social relationships.
