SGM Edgar Monsanto

Senior Enlisted Advisor

Sgt. Maj. Edgar Monsanto currently serves as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Headquarters, Army Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1, Directorate of Prevention, Resilience and Readiness. His most recent assignment was with the 3rd Security Force Assistance Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas.

Monsanto enlisted in the United States Army on Sept. 3, 1997. He completed basic combat training and advanced individual training as a 13B cannon crew member at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

His first assignments included roles with A Battery, 1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery in Korea, followed by HHB, 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery at Fort Sill. He later served with C Battery, 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery in Warner Barracks, Germany, and returned to Fort Sill for assignments with 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery; 1st Battalion, 22nd Field Artillery; and 1st Battalion, 78th Field Artillery. Additional overseas service includes C Battery, Fires Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck, Germany, and A Battery/F Company, 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

Monsanto also served with A Battery/HHB, 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas; 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Division Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood; the Sergeants Major Management Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky; and the Fires Center of Excellence Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Fort Sill.

Monsanto deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and took part in a peacekeeping rotation with the Kosovo Force mission.

Monsanto’s military education includes the Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Drill Sergeant School, Basic Instructor Course, Small Group Leader Instructor Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Air Movement Operations Course, Unit Prevention Leader Course, HAZMAT Course, Field Artillery Master Gunner Course, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Jumpmaster School, Battle Staff Course, Master Resilience Course, the Sergeants Major Course Class 68, the Battalion and Brigade Pre-Command Course and other professional military education. He holds a Bachelor of Professional Studies in business and management from Excelsior College.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2 OLC), the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (9 loops), National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Service Medal (1 star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 5, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 7, Kosovo Defense Medal, Korea Defense Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award, Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Drill Sergeant Badge, Master Gunner Badge, Driver Badge (wheel/track) and the German Expert Marksmanship Badge. Monsanto is a member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club and a recipient of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara and the Horatio Gates Distinguished Service Medal.

Monsanto is the father of four--Breanna, Amanni, Lyannie and Hudson.
