Quality housing for Soldiers and their Families contributes to Army readiness and leaders are committed to finding ways to improve housing conditions on installations around the world. The Army has a total of 100,000 houses with 90% of them being managed by privatized housing partners Corvias, Balfour Beatty and Lend-Lease. Though not all Army Families live on installation, 65% of Families live off installation in civilian communities.

  • Military By Owner provides advertising for homes located near military bases, as well as resources related to real estate, homeownership and military life.

  • Relocation Readiness helps with a comprehensive support system, whether it’s a Soldier’s first move or the last of many.
  • Tenant Bill of Rights commits to ensuring that privatized housing Soldiers and Families receive quality housing and fair treatment from the Military Housing Privatization Initiative project owners that operate and maintain privatized housing.

Moving

The Army has two peak moving seasons: Summer (June-September) and again in the Winter (December-January). Soldiers and Families can have the Army move their household goods or choose to move themselves which is known as a Personally Procured Move. Official orders must be received by a Soldier’s command before scheduling the move process.

  • DD Form 1780, Shipment Evaluation and Inspection Checklist is a web form within the Defense Personal Property System and is used by inspectors to document any violations. It applies to both domestic and international shipments, including one-time shipments and special solicitations.
  • Defense Personal Property System supports scheduling moves, tracking shipments and filing subsequent claims.
  • Global Household Goods Contract is a new Defense Department moving service for Soldiers and their Families. The full transition to GHC is scheduled to span several years, with new installations routinely added.
