Summer Time for Self-Care

As we stand at the edge of spring and gaze toward the golden days of summer quickly approaching, it is the perfect time to begin or refresh our self-care routines. The shift in seasons invites longer days, warmer weather, and more time spent outdoors. With the beauty of summer comes the responsibility to care for ourselves and our furry family members

Maintaining healthy behaviors within and across the five dimensions of personal readiness of physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and family is essential to our overall well-being. Summertime offers a natural opportunity to be more intentional in these areas.

Hydration Is Everything

With rising temperatures, our bodies require more water to stay energized, focused, and healthy; water to the body is like oil to a car. Staying hydrated is one of the simplest yet most powerful self-care habits. Keep a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day, infuse your water with fresh fruit, vegetables, or herbs for a refreshing drink, and don't wait until you're thirsty to sip. Water to the body is like oil to a car.

Skincare and Sun Protection

The sun might feel wonderful on your skin, but its rays can be damaging without protection. A good SPF should be part of your daily routine even on cloudy days. Don’t forget your ears, the tops of your feet, and your lips. Lightweight, breathable moisturizers help keep your skin hydrated and glowing without feeling heavy during the heat. I recently learned that some clothing offers built-in SPF protection. This is a great option to consider if you spend a lot of time outdoors. Do not forget to wear a hat also.

Your Pet’s Summer Needs Matter Too

Our pets feel the heat just like we do. Make sure they have constant access to fresh, clean water. On very hot days, avoid long walks on pavement; a rule of thumb is if it is too hot for your hand on the ground, it is too hot for their paws. Shade, cool indoor spaces, and shorter outdoor play sessions during early mornings or evenings can help keep them safe and comfortable.

Slow Down, Tune In

Self-care also means honoring your emotional and mental well-being. Take time to breathe, stretch, journal, or simply enjoy a walk. The longer days are perfect for a new morning routine or winding down with a good book on the porch. Whether it's ten minutes or an hour, carving out time for yourself is essential.

As summer draws near, let this be your gentle reminder that self-care is not selfish it is paramount to our well-being. From skincare to hydration to caring for our fur babies we love, taking care of the basics ensures we have the energy to fully enjoy all that this vibrant summer season has to offer.
