Dolly Parton, the singer-songwriter whose six-decade career made her one of country music’s most recognizable voices, died Aug. 25 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80. President Donald J. Trump directed American flags at all public buildings, military installations and U.S. territories to fly at half-staff in her memory through sunset the following day. She never wore the uniform, but for more than 50 years, Parton found ways to reach those who did. 

Twenty-one Soldiers across Sagami General Depot and six in Okinawa, Japan, battled through an 8-mile qualifier run Aug. 17 to earn a spot on USARJ’s first Army Ten-Miler team in more than a decade. 

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, in Washington, held a groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 25 at the I Corps Joint Operations Center to kick off a secretary of the Army-directed initiative that will include 19 projects on base to modernize infrastructure, housing and energy resilience supporting I Corps and the 62nd Airlift Wing. 

More than 22,000 jars of peanut butter arrived at Stronghold Food Pantry’s Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, facility Aug. 14. Within hours, the shipment had become more than a donation. It had become a community-wide effort to make sure the product reached military Families and local agencies that could put it to use.
